A Mexican synchronised swimming duo’s performance to the Bollywood song, Aila Re Aila, at the Rio Olympics 2016 left Indian fans enthralled, and the song’s music composer, Pritam, ecstatic.
“One of my friends sent me this video, and I was totally surprised to see them perform on my song, that too at a platform like Olympics,” an excited Pritam told Media.
Mexico’s Karem Achach and Nuria Diosdado showcased stunning underwater splits and swirls on the song from Akshay Kumar-starrer Khatta Meetha (2010) on August 15.
Their power-packed routine also found a fan in the ‘Khiladi’ Kumar. “Superb stuff. Congratulations to them for qualifying for the finals (sic),” Akshay tweeted on Tuesday.
The performance took Pritam back to the day when he composed the song.
“The film, in particular, was shot in the interiors of Maharashtra and I remember they (the cast and makers) were shooting in a village. I had gone there for music sittings. I had composed the song with the overall vibe I got from that village,” Pritam recalled. “At night, when Priyan Sir (Priyadarshan, the director), Akshay and others got back to the hotel, that’s when we all sat together and heard the song for the first time. It was instantly liked by all.”
“I have composed a lot of songs for films that have Akshay and Priyan Sir as a combination. Garam Masala (2005)… Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007)… and Khatta Meetha were some of them,” he said.
“I still can’t tell you how happy I am (at the song being featured at the Games). It’s one great surprise for me,” the composer said.
